The University of Maryland Women's Golf Association (UMWGA) league play day is Tuesday and is presented in 4 forms, Ladies Day, Mixer, Tournaments and Championship Rounds. The UMWGA is a member of the Suburban Women's Golf Association (SWGA) and the Montgomery and Prince George's County Golf Association (M-PG) . These groups were formed to promote competitive golf between various golf clubs located in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The UMWGA golfing season begins on April 1st and extends through October 31st.
There are two established groups: A- 18-hole group (Tee times starting at 8:00) B- 9-hole group (Tee times starting at 8:00)
At the beginning of the golfing season, the golfer may select the group in which she wishes to participate and notify the tournament chairperson of her choice. During the season, a golfer may change her group, but only once. She is encouraged to select the group best suited to her handicap. An 18-hole golfer should have a Maryland handicap index of 36.00 or less and 9-hole golfer should have an index of 27 or less. Membership dues are $35.00 and Handicap fee is $25.00. LADIES DAY Most the outings are called Ladies Day and is usually assigned a hostess. It is the hostess’ responsibility to choose a game to play that day. Once a month the league may change the format to tournaments and/or mixers.
TOURNAMENTS All members of the UMWGA are eligible. During the season, the Tournament Chairperson reviews each member’s scorecards. Scorecards must be totaled and attested to by at least 2 players before turning in. Tournaments are continuing competition throughout the golf season and the winners are announced at the fall luncheon.
Players who do not keep their handicap at the University of Maryland must post their current handicap index at the beginning of each month. If it’s not posted on the day of a tournament, you can play but not as part of the tournament. All UMWGA members must maintain a handicap index at the player’s home course.
18-HOLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, TOURNAMENTS & PRIZES
To be eligible to play in the Club Championship and/or to receive end of the year prize money a player must have played at least 5 times on league day (i.e. ladies’ day, tournaments & UMDWGA Invitational) at the University of Maryland during the current golf season.
In addition, to be eligible to play in SWGA & M-PG, a player must have played at least 5 times at University of Maryland during the previous golf season.
